Minors
Students wishing to gain additional knowledge in a subject area outside of their concentration and major may choose to pursue a minor at another school or college. Minors are not required for SMG students.
Minor Declaration forms (see below) must be submitted to the Undergraduate Program Office. Requirements for each minor are listed on the respective Minor Declaration form and, in some cases, in the Boston University Bulletin.
Minors in CAS, CFA, COM, ENG, SED or SHA will appear on the final transcript, and will not be posted on the transcript unless the completed Minor Declaration form has been submitted to the Undergraduate Program Office.
Students should meet with an advisor in the Undergraduate Program Office at the School of Management for assistance with incorporating a minor into their plan of study.
College of Arts and Sciences

Approved minors exist in virtually all College of Arts and Sciences liberal arts departments.
The number of courses required for a minor varies. An Economics minor, for example, requires an SMG student to take only five courses beyond the EC101/EC102 requirement. A minor in a foreign language, however, can require up to 10 courses, particularly if the student has no previous background in the language.
To declare a minor in CAS, students will first need to obtain a CAS Minor form from the Undergraduate Program Office. The next step is to set up an appointment with a professor in the department in which one wishes to minor. This is usually done by calling the department. Students should bring both the CAS Minor form and an unofficial copy of their transcript to their appointment. Once the CAS Minor form has been completed and signed by the CAS professor and the student, it should be returned to the Undergraduate Program Office.

Students interested in applying to medical school should complete a series of courses designed to prepare them for admission. You must meet with an advisor in the Pre-Professional Advising Center at CAS. These courses do not make up a recognized minor, but will fulfill some Level A, B, and C requirements.

Declaration of a Minor in COM (doc)
The minor in Advertising through the College of Communication is designed for students who want a general introduction to the concepts and practices of the advertising profession. This minor is restricted to School of Management students, and is available to all currently enrolled SMG students regardless of class year.
Registration for all COM courses is on a space-available basis. No transfer credit may be used to fulfill the COM requirements. Students must register for all COM courses at the corresponding COM department.

The College of Engineering minor has been designed for students who want a general introduction to the concepts and applications of engineering. Students may choose either a mechanical or electrical track. A 16-credit residency in the College of Engineering is required, and a minimum grade of C+ is required in all courses fulfilling the minor. All course substitutions must be approved by the College of Engineering Undergraduate Committee.
