Satisfactory Academic Progress
Academic Standards and Graduation Requirements:
Academic Standards
The School of Management Undergraduate Academic Standards Committee reviews the progress of all SMG students after the fall semester. Those students currently in good academic standing who fall into one of the following categories receive a warning letter:
- All students whose cumulative GPA is below a 2.0.
- All students whose semester GPI is below a 2.0.
- Freshmen whose semester GPI is between 2.0 and 2.2.
- All students who complete fewer than three 4-credit academic courses without prior approval of part-time status.
All SMG students are reviewed again at the end of each academic year. Those students currently in good academic standing who fall into one of the following categories are placed on academic probation for the following academic semester:
- All students whose cumulative GPA is below a 2.0.
- All students who complete fewer than six 4-credit academic courses during the previous academic year without prior approval of part-time status.
Students on probation are reviewed at the end of their probationary semester.
- Those whose cumulative GPA remains below 2.0, or who complete fewer than three 4-credit academic courses without prior approval of part-time status, are placed on probation for one final semester.
- Those who raise their cumulative GPA to 2.0 or greater are removed from probation for the following semester.
Students who have been on probation for two semesters are reviewed at the end of the academic year.
- Those whose cumulative GPA remains below 2.0, or who complete fewer than six 4-credit academic courses during the academic year without prior approval of part-time status, are permanently dismissed from the School of Management and Boston University.
- Those who raise their cumulative GPA to 2.0 or greater are removed from probation for the following semester.
Please note that, for the purposes of satisfactory academic progress, a completed course is one in which a student receives a grade of “D” or higher. Coursework taken in Boston University’s Summer Term immediately following the academic year under review will be considered in determining probation and permanent dismissal.
The University Trustees award degrees upon the recommendation of the faculty of the School of Management. Students graduate according to the following requirements and regulations:
- Students must complete all required courses.
- Students must complete at least 3 semesters of full-time course work in residence. Please note that summer term does not count towards this residency requirement.
- Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
- All degree requirements must be completed within seven years of the initial date of registration in an undergraduate degree program.
- Students will not graduate with an Incomplete or an MG (Missing Grade) in any course required for the degree.
- Physical education courses, College of Fine Arts musical instrument courses, and ROTC credits cannot be applied toward the degree or the final cumulative grade point average.
