Spring 2010 Registration
Steps you should take for successful registration planning
The following general guidelines will assist you with the process of planning for your schedule for the following semester.
Boston University students register once each semester for the following semester. Please note: the School of Management no longer requires an Academic Advising Code (AAC) to 'unlock' the WebReg system (except for Dual Degree students, who will be contacted individually).
To make this process run smoothly, there are a few steps students can complete prior to their assigned time of registration:
1. Mark Your Calendar
2. Complete Outstanding Administrative Requirements
3. Choose Your Courses
4. Plan Your Schedule
5. See an Advisor (Walk-in Advising Hours Schedule)

2. Complete Outstanding Administrative Requirements
- SENIORS who have not submitted their Concentration and Graduation Application will be prevented from registering.
- FRESHMEN who have not submitted their signed Academic Conduct Code Affirmation (pdf) sheet will be prevented from registering.
- Students will only be permitted to register for courses if they have complied with all of the following University policies:
- Students are required to resolve any issues with Student Accounts.
- Students are required to submit health forms (including proof of immunizations) to Student Health Services. Please email shshelp@bu.edu for assistance.
- Students are required to submit a BU Emergency Alert phone number, and update or confirm this phone number by September 1st and March 1st of each year. Log on to the Student Link, click on 'Personal' and then 'Address and Phone.'
Check your 'Compliance Status' under the 'Personal' tab on the Student Link to check your status on these matters.
- Students are required to resolve any issues with Student Accounts.
3. Choose Your Courses
- What courses should I take?
- Seniors should refer to the notes on their advisor-reviewed Graduation Application for instructions on courses remaining to complete the degree. Please note that the information on the Link's Degree Advice system is sometimes inaccurate; be sure to go by your paper Graduation Application.
- Sophomores and Juniors should refer to the Curriculum Overview and the Concentration Requirements pages for further details, along with notes from previous advising appointments and checksheet copies.
- Juniors registering for Core in Spring 2010: the Core Registration Form (doc) is due to the UPO by 5pm on November 6th. Students with late forms will be placed on a waiting list.
- Freshmen, please see the Guidelines for Freshmen. This information, along with a copy of your checksheet, will be distributed in your SM121 discussion on Movember 2nd.
- All students: Click here for information on Elective Requirements.
- What material is covered in a course?
Click here for SMG Course Descriptions. Course descriptions for all courses can be found in the University Bulletin (found in the Undergraduate Student Lounge and in the UPO), and in BU's searchable course description database. - What are the pre-requisites for SMG courses?
Click here for SMG Course Pre-requisites. Please pay special attention to the pre-requisites listed for SMG courses, as you risk not receiving degree credit for courses taken without the necessary pre-requisites. - When do classes meet (day, time)?
Please search the University Class Schedule.
- Which upper-level electives will be offered in upcoming semesters?
Not all classes are offered each semester. To assist you with your planning, please see the list of Tentative 2010-2011 Upper-Level Electives. - May I see the course/instructor evaluations for the courses I'm interested in taking?
Yes!! The SMGportal features a Course/Instructor Evaluation Search. Login in and choose 'Course Rating' from the tab at the top. Students are also welcome to review students' comments from previous semesters by visting the Undergraduate Program Office.
4. Plan Your Schedule
- Complete the WebReg course planner. You can add and remove courses from your planners at any time. WebReg features a graphing function so you can plot your schedule and be aware of any time conflicts immediately.
- Search for courses by time. The University Class Schedule search screen now has a feature that allows you to search for a course by time. This will allow you to search for an elective that fits around your schedule of required courses. The day and time pulldown menus are on the same line as the 'Search by Class Subject' menu, which you may leave blank if you're unsure of what subject you want to explore. Please refer to the Elective Requirements page for assistance in selecting an elective to fulfill your requirements.
5. See an Advisor
- If you are uncertain about your course selection, you should come to Walk-In Advising Hours (see above), or make an appointment with an academic advisor who will go over remaining course requirements and advise you on proper course selection.
- You may request a copy of your progress checksheet from the Undergraduate Program Office to assist with your course selection, or you may consult Degree Advice on the Student Link. Students should not wait until the week before registration to meet with an academic advisor. While we do offer Walk-In Advising Hours for several weeks during registration periods, it is not possible to see all students during the week prior to registration. Remember to make appointments early in the semester to avoid the rush.
- Walk-in Advising Hours for Registration Planning:
- Students are invited to come to the UPO for walk-in appointments on the dates/times listed above. Academic advisors will be available to help you with registration planning for the upcoming semester on a first-come first-served basis -- be sure to sign up when you arrive at the UPO! To meet with an advisor about long-term planning or other questions, please schedule an appointment in advance.
