Class Year Career Plan:
MBA

First Year

Summer before MBA program begins

  • Prepare MBA resumé and have it approved by Career Advisor prior to beginning program
  • Complete Career Leader Assessment tool to determine interests and values and how they are related to career choices.

August/September

  • Attend Career ToolKit, a course taught by Career Advisors that will teach the tools needed for a successful job search.
  • Attend Career Portfolio Introduction Meetings
  • Register and post your approved resumé on MiTRAC for job announcements, company presentations and career events.
  • Set up at least two appointments with your Cohort Career Advisor for the fall semester. One of these meetings will be for a mock interview.
  • Begin to complete your Career Development Plan for your job search.
  • Join GSM clubs and local professional organizations; plan to attend events related to your career interests.
  • Review the BU School of Management alumni database (Career Advisory Network, at www.bu.edu/alumni/careers/can); join the Linked In community (www.linkedin.com) and begin to schedule informational interviews with alumni in your field of interest.
MBA

October

  • Begin to compile a list of companies to target.
  • Talk to second year students about their summer internship experiences.
  • Check in to have another resumé check to ensure your information is reflecting the career path you are pursuing.

November/December

  • Mail out cover letters and resumés to targeted companies that hire early for summer interns (primarily banks and consulting firms).
  • Recruiting deadlines begin for campus recruiting for internships; review Mitrac often for updates.
  • Review job-related websites for internships postings; continue to do so throughout the year.
  • Talk to professors about your career aspirations.
  • Continue to develop your network both internally and externally.
MBA

Spring Semester

  • Take part in spring campus recruiting; keep an eye on Mitrac for deadlines and interview dates.
  • Continue to target employers of interest; begin sending out resumés and cover letters early in the semester.
  • Continue to attend Career Center, GSM club, and trade organization events; be sure also to keep in touch with any networking contacts made during the first semester.
  • If you are an international student (F-1 or J-1 visa), make an appointment with the ISSO early in the semester to determine what paperwork is necessary in order to accept an internship.
  • Meet with Career Advisor as needed to help you strategize your next steps.

Second Year

  • Meet with Career Advisor to update your resumé to reflect your internship experience and strategy for full-time position after graduation.
  • Network with classmates that did internships of interest as well as with incoming first year students.
  • Update your resumé on Mitrac for career positions.
  • Improve on your interview skills by meeting with Career Advisors.
  • Keep Career Center updated on career interests and targeted companies so we can assist you in your search.
  • Get assistance with negotiating offers.
  • REPORT YOUR OFFER TO CAREER CENTER
